Transgender Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
Pelvic floor physical therapy can have many benefits for transgender individuals. The unique needs of each individual can be addressed before, during, and after gender-affirming treatments for optimal pelvic health.
Pre-surgically, pelvic floor physical therapy can help to prepare the pelvic floor muscles through strengthening and mobility, as well as by providing techniques for pain and anxiety management. This will lead to improved surgical outcomes and create a smoother recovery.
Post-surgically, transgender pelvic floor physical therapy can help with immediate aftercare for post-surgical pain and healing, as well as help to re-orient your body to your pelvic floor and any changes around it. This may range from scar tissue mobilization to regaining pelvic floor mobility and control through various techniques and exercises.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can have many additional benefits regardless of whether a gender-affirming surgery was performed. This could include anything from education on binding and its effect on the pelvic floor, to different sex hormones and their effect on the pelvic floor.
While transgender pelvic floor physical therapy can have some differences in regard to treatment and assessment, everyone has a pelvis and every pelvis presents differently whether you are male, female, or transitioning.
